Best Garden Hoes Reviewed

Ask any gardener worth his salt which tools they class as important and I guarantee that a garden hoe will be high on that list.
Hoes have been used since ancient times to clear or shape soil in preparation for planting, to remove weeds, to harvest potatoes and other root foods, as well many other uses.
The design is simple enough, a blade on the end of a shaft, but a wide range of different sized and shaped blades have been used over time and across the world, for various purposes including weeding or breaking up soil like a fork or spade. The best garden hoes should be sturdy and have a comfortable handle to grip, the blade edge should help you cut through soil easily, and it should be well priced so based on these ideas I have reviewed the best garden hoes to save you time.

In this article we are reviewing the best garden hoes out there at the moment in order to make your purchasing choices easier to make.

1. Harbour Housewares Full Size Azada Digging Hoe

Available on Amazon for £16.50, this garden hoe from Harbour Housewares is getting a good amount of positive remarks from customers.
It has a very traditional Azada style that hasn’t changed much for thousands of years, and for good reason – it works.
A long 120cm handle, plus a 21cm blade, make this hoe a tool you can use without having to bend over, saving you back and knee pain.
The blade measures 21cm x 1.6cm and is made from forged steel. The leading edge has been well sharpened so it cuts through soil with ease. The blade comes separate to the handle and needs to be slid down it until the blade stops. I would recommend using something to secure the blade in pale for extra safety though.
The handle is made from solid wood and crafted with balance in mind, and I have to say they’ve done a good job of it.

  • Traditional Azada look
  • 120cm long handle stops you having to bend over
  • Handle is solid wood to lower vibrations
  • 21cm x 1.6cm blade is made of forged steel and is sharp
  • Well balanced tool

2. Spear & Jackson 2135NS Select Carbon Steel Dutch Hoe

This award winning Dutch hoe from spear and Jackson is our next review.
The manufacturers state that this tool is at its best when it is working just under the soil and being moved back and forth. I have to agree, it does a great job of removing weeds.
The hoe head and socket are both made out of heat treated carbon steel which makes them strong and likely to have a long working life. To increase longevity, the head has been epoxy coated so that it is much more resistant to corrosion, alkaline, scratches and rust.
Lightweight but sturdy is how I’d describe the shaft. Its tubular steel design provides plenty of support for the head and the lower part has been covered in a soft grip, I think the edging tool from these guys also has the same soft grip technology.
It is priced at £39.99.

  • Award winning Dutch hoe
  • Good build quality
  • Heat treated carbon steel head and socket
  • Coated to resist rust, corrosion and other element damage
  • Sturdy tubular steel shaft with soft grip

3. Draper 88799 Carbon Steel Dutch Hoe

Draper 88799 Carbon Steel Dutch Hoe
4.2 out of 5 stars ( 237 customer reviews )

Our next review is of another Dutch hoe, this time from Draper.
It has an overall length of 5 feet so you won’t have to stoop down too low while using it, and the total weight is just over 900 grams, meaning it can be used by almost anyone.
The blade is pressed carbon steel and has been coated to prevent rusting and protect it from damage. Being carbon steel, it is easy to sharpen an edge on the blade and it will stay sharp for a long time.
At the end of the tubular steel handle there is a moulded grip for your hand and it also has a handy hole to hang it up in the garage with.
Overall quality of the tool is good and the parts are held together securely.

  • 5 feet long
  • Weighs under 1kg
  • Carbon steel head will keep a sharp edge well
  • Tubular steel handle with plastic grip
  • Coated to prevent damage from rust and corrosion

4. Silverline 186817 Dutch Hoe

Silverline 186817 Dutch Hoe, 1200 mm
4.7 out of 5 stars ( 259 customer reviews )
With a low price of £7.69, this garden hoe is a real bargain, and it’s easy to see why it is a best seller.
First of all, it is a good size, measuring 1200cm so you can use it comfortably standing up.
The shaft is made from tubular steel for sturdiness and there is a comfortable grip with a hanging hole at the end.
This lightweight Dutch hoe can be swung around by just about anyone and does an excellent job of cutting through those ugly weeds.
The epoxy coated, pressed steel head has been hammer finished to remove any imperfections, and the coating increases the tool’s working life.

  • 1200cm shaft
  • Tubular steel handle with comfortable grip
  • Lightweight
  • Hammer finished pressed steel head
  • Anti-rust coating

5. Draper 20689 Young Gardener Dutch Hoe

Draper 20689 Young Gardener Dutch Hoe
4.2 out of 5 stars ( 46 customer reviews )
This Dutch hoe was made specifically with young gardeners in mind, but it is also useful for people who are wheelchair bound, or even as a tool for tending raised beds.
Even though it is not full size, it still has been made to a high standard and is a robust piece of kit.
It measures 96.5 x 20.5 x 11.5 cm and weighs under 500 grams so it is suitable for children 4-10 years old.
The 86cm handle is made out of solid ash that has been lacquered for durability and the head is tempered carbon steel. The handle has a wrist strap to help prevent any accidents caused by slippery hands.

  • Compact Dutch hoe specially made for young gardeners
  • Very well made and robust
  • Lacquered ask handle with wrist strap
  • Tempered carbon steel head
  • Very lightweight and can be used for raised flower beds

6. Azada Hoe by Biggest Discount Ltd

Our final review of the day is of another Azada style hoe, this time coming from Biggest Discount Ltd and costing 26.99 at the moment on Amazon.
Back pain is not a worry when using this hoe as the wooden handle is a good 120cm long. Even though it is a good length, its thickness of 38mm (diameter) keeps it solid and supports the head nicely.
The head itself is also large, measuring 190mm wide and 240mm deep and will allow you to make light work of even the largest beds. The makers have constructed the head out of forged steel so it won’t be breaking on you anytime soon, but the head will need to be fixed onto the shaft with something as they don’t come assembled.

  • 120cm long wooden handle
  • Large 190mm x 240mm head
  • Head is made from forged steel
  • Classic design
  • Solid tool
